How to choose a contractor

While many home repair contractors are honest and reputable, unfortunately, there are people and businesses who prey on consumers after a disaster.

It is a smart idea to ask your friends and co-workers for a referral. Local building or material supply companies can also help point you in the right direction. Below we offer some tips to help you hire the right contractor to repair your home or business.

Is your contractor qualified and trustworthy?

Before you hire a contractor to fix your property, take the time to ask them about:

  1. Experience: Ideally, you want to hire a contractor with at least five years of experience. Ask about projects they have completed that are similar to yours.
  2. Insurance: Confirm that the contractor has liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage.
  3. References: Ask for names and contact information of previous customers who would be willing to talk to you about their experience with the contractor.
  4. Complaints: Check out the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or other consumer organizations to see if the contractor has a record of complaints about workmanship, cost over-runs or other issues.
  5. Communication: The contractor should be willing to maintain an open line of communication with you, providing updates and frequent progress reports on the work being completed.
  6. Physical location of their business: Avoid working with contractors that only have a P.O. Box or that have recently moved into the area.
  7. Contract: Let the contractor know you will require a signed contract that outlines all the details of the work, including timelines and payment schedules, work to be completed, materials to be provided and other items important to the project.
