Grange Insurance releases first video in educational series

Posted on October 21, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Grange Insurance announced today the release of its first video in a new series called, “Insurance Made Simple,” dedicated to educating consumers about insurance topics in an easy-to-understand way. The first, titled, “Homeowners Insurance: Two new ways to cut costs,” focuses on how to keep homeowners insurance costs down.

“Severe weather has driven up homeowners insurance costs,” said Peter McMurtrie, chief sales, marketing and affiliate officer, Grange Insurance. “The video will provide consumers with two new industry options that will help bring those costs back down while maintaining a high standard of coverage.”

One of those ways, explained in the video, is adding actual cash value (ACV) to roof coverage as part of a homeowners insurance policy. Doing so takes into account the age and general condition of a roof should wind or hail damage it. The ACV roof coverage will reimburse the policyholder based on what the roof is actually worth today, and can save consumers up to 20 percent on their premium.

In addition, consumers should consider specifying a separate wind-hail deductible. An independent agent can work with their customers to choose a percentage of their home’s value that they’ll pay out of pocket for a covered wind or hail loss. This can save consumers up to 50 percent on their homeowner policy costs.

“Due to increased severe weather patterns in the past 8-10 years, homeowners insurance is evolving,” said McMurtrie. “We want our independent agents to be equipped with the tools they need to help consumers make the best decisions when choosing a policy that works best for their personal situation. In fact, this entire series will help consumers better understand how insurance works so they can choose the right coverage, prevent claims and save on their premium without compromising protection.”

The videos will be available at, a new webpage that will also contain supplemental information on these topics. The videos will also be posted to Grange Insurance’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, and available through the company’s independent agents. The series will cover topics from all Grange Insurance’s major business lines, including life insurance, personal lines and commercial lines, and will feature safety and savings tips as well.
