YMCA of Central Ohio receives $100,000 donation from Grange Insurance

COLUMBUS, OH — Through Grange Insurance, YMCA of Central Ohio is honored to receive a $100,000 grant that will be used to renovate childcare and teen program spaces located in the North YMCA at 1640 Sandalwood Place. These renovations will allow for the YMCA to provide childcare to eighty-eight children, serving seventy-five families. The North Y has served the community for over forty years and first began offering childcare services in 1989.

"We are proud to support YMCA of Central Ohio and the Grange Insurance Center for Youth Development at the North Y," said Doreen DeLaney Crawley, chief operations officer at Grange Insurance. "Grange stands behind the Y's mission to invest in youth in underserved communities to help them discover and realize their full potential."

"The Y has always been a pillar in our community, and this pandemic has shined light on the critical need for youth outreach programs. At Grange, we want to do our part to ensure children have enrichment and educational opportunities, among other services, in an environment that allows them to thrive, be safe and stay healthy."

This gift and partnership are critical in order to enhance the safety of the space, where the Y can continue providing youth development programs for preschoolers, school-age children and teens. Located in the Northland area with a high percentage of economically disadvantaged families, the comprehensive high-quality childcare curriculum is based on developmental goals that help prepare young children for school success and cover the following areas: cognitive, language, physical, social/emotional, literacy and math. The North YMCA has maintained a 5-star rating from Step Up to Quality, demonstrating the highest level of quality for childcare in the state of Ohio.

Now more than ever, early childhood education and care are essential to helping all children reach their full potential and creates a pathway out of poverty. Seventy-six percent of the preschoolers served in 2020-2021 at the North YMCA fell below 200% of the Federal Poverty Line (98% for school-age) and seventy percent of the students were children of color.

“We are grateful for the support and partnership of Grange Insurance over the years. We share a commitment and passion for helping the community prepare for the future. With this gift, the YMCA can continue to help young children and teens in the Northland area so they can reach their full potential,” said Tony Collins, President & CEO, YMCA of Central Ohio.

Renovations will be completed by the end of the year and the space will be named Grange Insurance Youth Development Center. Plans for the Grand Opening will be announced later this Fall.
