Columbus, OH – Today, Grange Insurance Company announced that Beth Murphy has been named the company’s Chief Legal Officer, effective January 1, 2024, as LaVawn Coleman retires at the end of the year after nearly 34 years with the company.

“LaVawn has successfully led our enterprise through several significant transactions that will continue to shape our company well into the future,” said Grange Insurance President and CEO John Ammendola.

“Our associates, agents and customers have all benefited from her dedicated leadership and boundless commitment to our mission and core values. Just last year, LaVawn was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Institutes Griffith Insurance Education Foundation — a well-deserved honor as she has been a beacon of integrity in our industry and our company. We wish her all the best as she starts this new chapter in her life.”

“I am excited to have Beth step into the role of Chief Legal Counsel,” said Ammendola. “In her two decades with Grange, Beth has successfully led our corporate legal functions, guiding several key initiatives including our conversion to a mutual holding company and the creation and licensing of our P&C companies. She has a proven track record of effectively managing risk, compliance and complex corporate governance matters. Her experience and expertise will ensure our organization’s integrity and stability well into the future.”

With Grange for 21 years, Murphy has served in several leadership roles within the general counsel’s office, most recently as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Assistant Secretary. Prior to joining Grange, she was a private practice attorney for several years.

Murphy is an active leader within the insurance industry, currently serving as vice chair of the Virginia Property & Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association and on the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies state affairs committee. She has served as past chair of the Ohio Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and the Insurance Institute of Kentucky, and past foreign insurer representative of the Kentucky Municipal Premium Tax Council. Murphy is equally passionate about the community in which she lives and works. She currently serves on the board of directors for the Columbus Urban League and Handshake America. Additionally, she previously served on the boards of Melissa’s House and St. Stephen’s Community House. Murphy earned her bachelor’s degree and juris doctorate from the University of Alabama.
